To me,  Internet Marketing seemed to be the perfect home-based business.  You could be your own boss,  set your own hours and have unlimited earnings potential in the world-wide web marketplace.  The possibilities seemed endless, and so did the number of opportunities. . . .but where was one to begin?  This question was always in the back of my mind.

I stumbled into Internet Marketing almost by accident.  Searching for different ways to create “multiple streams of income,”  I attended a “4X Made Easy” seminar.  I liked the idea of currency trading but their trading package was too expensive for my limited budget.  So when I got home I began surfing the Internet for free information about Forex Trading.   The one skill I did have was knowing how to surf the Internet!  I signed up for several free e-mail courses and got freebies from some other Forex sites.  Eventually, I became an affiliate with some of these programs.

I was clueless about marketing affiliate programs.  I could see the possibilities but had no idea about how to get started.  Later on, I received an e-mail invitation from on of my affiliate programs inviting me to become an “all-star” in his Internet Marketing mentoring program.  The program was only made available to a limited number of participants, promising those who qualified a five-figure income when they completed the program in the next 90 days.  Even though I had no Internet Marketing experience, I decided to apply and give it a try.  To my surprise, I qualified by meeting all the entry requirements, including a $99.00 entrance fee.

I had never purchased training up to this point. I was very nervous and anxious about spending $99.00 and wondered if I was just being a fool for spending that kind of money on something that may not even work.  However, looking back on it, this was the best investment I made in myself up to that point.  I learned what I needed to get to the next level.  This would not have been possible without investing in a mentor.

The next 90 days were grueling!  I was working full-time in my regular job, supporting my wife and three kids, being a husband and father, and then spending the rest of my time working on my assignments.  I felt like I was in college all over again!  If we did not complete our assignments on time we would be kicked out of the program.  Several did not make it and either dropped out or were kicked out of the program.  As for me, I resolved to complete the program no matter what because I was serious about making money on the Internet.  Over the next 90 days I learned the basics of Internet Marketing:  1) how to create and host my own websites, 2) how to drive traffic my websites, 3) how to set up and auto responder and capture the names and e-mail addresses of those visiting my sites, and finally,  4) how to build a relationship with my list of followers.

I would like to say that I did reach the goal of a five-figure income after the 90 days, but no…I did recoup my initial investment plus a bit more. Even though I didn’t make much, it was enough to prove to me that one could literally start from scratch with no experience and make some money on the Internet.   It does require and investment of time. You need a few basis tools to set up your marketing funnel. You DO need some money to work with to get started, but not much.  And you do need to hook up with someone that can show you the ropes to get started.  Once you have learned some basics, you can be in business for yourself!

After the “all-star” program I needed a break and summer was just around the corner.  Our mentor went on vacation and our group was eventually dissolved.  I realized how important a road map was.  As a group we had a 90-day goal which consisted of daily and weekly assignments we needed to complete in order to reach that goal.  Once the program ended, and I was on my own I didn’t know what I wanted to do.  I knew I still wanted to make money on the Internet, but life kind of got in the way and I put Internet Marketing on the back burner for awhile.

It always seems like when I get strapped for income I start looking for ways to create “multiple streams of income”.   So once again, while day dreaming at my full-time job, I was considering re-enrolling in a network marketing company that I liked and had made money with before.  I liked the products, but the thought of building a downline again was discouraging because I didn’t have much success doing it before with the traditional methods my upline taught me before.  But then I thought, “what if there was a way to combine network marketing and Internet marketing together?”  It would eliminate the obstacles of the traditional marketing methods.

So once again, I jumped on the Internet and began surfing for network marketing companies that were building downlines through the Internet.  I looked at a Google Ad that mentioned the name of the company I was interested in.  It offered free leads, free training and a generic marketing system that could be applied to any network marketing business — exactly what I was looking for!  I enrolled for free and got my free marketing website and free training just as my new mentor promised.

I began marketing my affiliate website on traffic exchanges and safelists as was recommended.  As I surfed the traffic exchanges I saw everyone else promoting the same website as I was promoting!  No wonder I wasn’t getting any responses!  I soon realized that I would need to set myself apart if I was going to get anywhere marketing a generic funded proposal system. And again, I realized that I would need my own website to start attracting leads for my business.

At about this same time, I was introduced to Mike Dillard’s “Magnetic Sponsoring” course and opted in to his free video boot camp. He showed me exactly what I was looking for: how I could promote myself and build relationships with others to naturally attract them to my business.  Later,  I learned how to implement the principles of attraction marketing by becoming a professional guide at Renegade University.  Here everything was presented in step-by-step, click-by-click video tutorials showing me exactly how to start my own marketing machine.  I cannot recommend these resources highly enough.  I was well on my way to earning the kind of money I only dreamed about a few months earlier.

So in conclusion, if you are serious about making money on the internet, I would suggest to invest time and/or money in training; get a few basic tools and resources, and learn how to set up your own website.  If you don’t have much money, you’ll need to invest your time to learn the basics.  If you have some money invest it wisely.   Finally, I’d recommend having a mentor that can lead you through the maze rather than stumbling through it yourself.  There are many different paths you can choose, but choose one and just get started. I’ve always said, “50% of success is just showing up. The other 50% is doing something when you get there.”  Take action now to achieve your goals and dreams.
